Substances, Attributes, and Modifications—Dravya, Guna, and Paryay—are core concepts in Jainism that explain the nature of all substances and their transformations, shedding light on the autonomous functioning of the universe. Substances, Attributes and Modifications are explained over six Modules of which this is Module 1.

This Module explains the nature of Universe and introduces the concept of Substances (Dravya) in Jainism.
Humanity has long pondered the mysteries of existence: What is the universe made of? Who created it? How does it function? While science offers theories, Jain philosophy provides timeless insights drawn from the Omniscient Souls-Arahants and Kevalgyaani Bhagwans.
Their teachings, preserved in sacred scriptures, reveal that everything in existence is composed of six eternal substances: Soul (Jeev), Matter (Pudgal), Motion Medium (Dharmastikaay), Rest Medium (Adharmastikaay), Space (Akash), and Time (Kaal). These substances are governed by the principle of Utpad-Vyay-Dhrouvya-continuous evolution, extinction, and permanence.
By understanding substances and their transformations, we can unravel profound truths about the universe and ourselves.
